April Tyre Troubles

April 2023 - Here are  some case pictures showing what our 24 hour commercial tyres fitting teams have faced during the last month.  Our  commercial tyre changers, based in over 1,000 tyre repair and fitting depots around the UK, provide a before and after photograph along with a tyre replacement or repair log for each job and so we can share some of them with you. Our objective is to fix any tyre, anytime and any where and most importantly, get you back on the road in under 90 minutes.

1. This rather old looking  315/80R22.5 near side rear tyre  was replaced with a budget tyre.  Our commercial tyre emergency services team thought that this was a good example of a probable maintenance job to replace the wheel nuts as they had advised the driver.  Our tyre fitter carried out a 30 minute re-torque but advised that a further re-torque would be needed as recommended by Mercedes after another 25-50km of use.  The old tyre was scrapped with only 2mm of tread left.  This emergency truck tyre change took place near Wakefield and took 1hour 18 mins to complete.

2. It took 55 minutes to complete this emergency truck tyre fitting, located close to the fire station at Rhayader in mid Wales. The commercial tyre callout resulted in a 385/65R22.5 Samson GL56F tyre being fitted along with a 11.75X22.5 rim which we supplied too, both  for the nearside front which had clearly come into contact with a more solid object.  Clearly, to get to safety, the old tyre was badly damaged and written off due to it being run flat by the driver after the impact and deflation.  The old tyre, a Bridgestone was removed and both the tyre and rim went back with the driver for the customer to scrap themselves.  The job took just 55 minutes to complete so that the truck could get back on the road to complete its delivery.

3. This Telehandler puncture repair took just 22 minutes to complete and the specialist off road tyre  that was punctured was a23x10.50-12  BKT tyre on the nearside front.  The Telehandler Avant Loader was quickly back in action and you can see, with a tread depth of 10mm there was no need for a replacement and our mobile tyre repairer was off site in Leeds at a roadside location at 8:45.

4. Not for the first time, here is an unusual site with an unfortunately irreparable 385/65R22.5, Double coin RT910 with load rating of 160K that was replaced with the identical truck tyre as the puncture couldn’t be repaired.  As you can see this unusual piece of road debris was a webbing strap with hook that did the damage.  The wheel also underwent a re-torque with an overall job completion time of 45minutes.  The old tyre was scrapped and saw its last use on the Northbound M69/ M6 junction near Coventry where it saw the end of its useful life.

5. This shredded and blown out truck tyre held up its driver for a mere 19 minutes after the 385/65R22.5 super single trailer, Debrica (aka budget tyre) was fitted as well as a High Pressure Valve Core.  The old blown out tyre went back to the tyre bank after failing on the M5, Northbound, 1/2 mile before junction 14, near Moreton in Gloucestershire.  The damaged tyres shows some of the many components that make up a tyre and that will be explained next month when we look at the many components that make up a modern tyre.

6. Not a great picture but we wanted to show this one which looks like it has been shot with a cross bolt and so which sadly couldn’t be repaired.  A 295/80R22.5 Samson tyre was fitted on the OS3RD OUTER position.  The lorry tyre replacement near Merridon Coventry resulted in the Continental tyre that was removed being sent back to the manufacturer as it had 17 mm tread depth remaining but unfortunately the puncture was unrepairable in the sidewall of the tyre.  The whole job took just 30 minutes to complete.

7. This photo doesn’t fully show the double damage that was done to both the 385/65R22.5 NSF & NSM positions on a super single trailer vehicle. As a result, this truck needed two wheels and two tyres so 2 hankook TH31 tyres were fitted, along with new valves and 2 new 11.75x22.5 10 stud off set wheels supplied and fitted too.
The damage to tyres and wheels as well as low tread, meant that both tyres and wheels had to be removed and replaced. As per the fleet operator’s request our emergency truck tyre fitter near the County Cricket ground in Taunton, Somerset  and the driver, tried to load them onto the truck to go back with the driver but the vehicle was fully loaded so there was no room and they got scrapped instead.  The hgv commercial tyre call out took 23 minutes to complete so at least it could get back onto its planned delivery schedule.

8. The job sheet doesn’t give the vehicle but by the state of the tread and as it is an Alliance brand tyre with 20mm tread depth, we are assuming it was an off road vehicle and maybe a tractor tyre puncture.  The pictures gives a graphic image of the inside and outside of this 800/45-30.5 Alliance tubeless.  The puncture repair was carried out on the offside rear and with 20mm tread depths, it was able to be repaired, the job took 1hr 3 minutes to complete. Whilst this was technically an out of hours job for our HGV truck tyre call out, it had been prebooked for early morning and was called in the day before.  The off road vehicle with punctured tyre was located on site near Crawley.

9. Again another tyre ‘inside and outside’ view of a punctured nearside front tyre of another Telehandler vehicle, This time the 400/80R24 Michelin Power CL tyre puncture,  was repaired by our hgv truck tyre fitting service nearby.  The tread depth was 30mm but the tyre fitter’s notes read ‘stripped tyre and removed all string repaired and gathered from inside 3 repairs’.  Not quite sure which part of the failed telehandler tyre was supported with string but it sounds like an overdue piece of commercial tyre maintenance.  The job took just 40 minutes to complete, starting at 09:44 on a building site in Wisbech.

10. This truck tyre blowout almost looks normal with a quick glimpse but on closer inspection you can see that the side wall of the tyre has blown out.  Local lorry tyre fitters near Michael Wood Services on the M5 fitted a 245/70R17.5 new Bridgestone trailer tyre.  The damaged tyre was a nearside mid tyre on a Volvo trailer. The old Bridgestone tyre was scrapped and it still had a relatively good tread depth of 12 mm but clearly it had failed catastrophically.
