March Tyre Troubles

March 2023 - Here are  some more unusual picture stories from  our mobile truck tyre fitting and van tyre road service specialists who are ever present on the roadsides of the UK helping drivers get their commercial vehicles back on the road as quickly as possible.  With over 1,000 tyre repair and fitting depots around the UK, we are always closer than you might think when you have a tyre to fix or replace and as the majority of the nearby tyre dealers also have a range of truck and van tyres in stock, that means you can challenge our truck tyre fitters to fix any tyre, anytime and anywhere.

– We start with a spectacular piece of embedded metal in this 315/70R22.5 tire which was replaced with a HANKOOK DH31. This offside rear inner wheel also had the benefit of a  30 minute  re-torque and the fitting of a temporary nut as a thread stripped when the wheel was being removed. The old tyre a  GOODYEAR RHD2 was unrepairable as the metal was caught in the sidewall.  Unfortunately, there was 13mm left as tread depth on the scrapped tyre.  The whole tire fitting took 1 hour 25 minutes to complete and was just out of normal fitting time at 18:35 when it was called in at Taunton Deane services near Taunton on the M5.

2 –This is what can happen when a truck wheel locks.  The very distinctive wear removing all of the rubber on a patch of the this 385/65R22.5  tyre.  It was replaced with a budget tyre fitted on a super single trailer at the nearside front position. The old tyre was a Westlake with a relatively healthy 10mm of tread left after this truck tyre replacement of what was a run flat tyre.  The job took just 29 minutes to complete thanks to our 24 hour commercial tyre fitters also near Taunton.

3 – This one was an emergency commercial tyre roadside replacement in a layby on the A 46 near Newark.  A 315/70R22.5 HANOOK AH31 was fitted in 37 minutes on a middle axle with a 156 L load rating.  The photo shows the old tyre still on the truck after an explosive blow out with not much of the tyre side wall left.

4 – A lesson learned here about leaving your tools lying around especially on a building site.  I’m sure this would have been an accidentally dropped screw driver that pierced the  500/60R22.5 tyre of a 9 ton JCB Dumper truck.  We always like to include a plant job as their tyre problems tend to be spectacular, in inaccessible  locations or just very muddy for our emergency commercial tyre fitters showing just a snapshot of what they have to endure on a daily basis.  This was fortunately an emergency truck tyre repair so not needing a dumper tyre replacement up in Scotland and was completed in 30 minutes.

5 – This time the blown out truck tyre didn’t stay on the wheel making the truck tyre wall look like a table decoration.  The 385/65R22.5 BF GOODRICH tyre that was fitted replaced the now scrapped  Pattern route control T  BRIDGESTONE tyre. The truck tyre fitter reported that he couldn’t report back on what the remaining tread depth was! No surprises looking at the disintegrated tyre.  It took just 26 minutes to complete this out of hours truck tyre replacement at 7am in the morning on the roadside on the A30.

6 – Another plant job this time a 7metre telehandler tyre repair of a 400/80R24 Alliance tyre. The photos show the ins and out of patching a tyre on this piece of plant equipment. The puncture repair took 33minutes to complete on site at a housebuilder near Earls Barton  not far from Northampton. Our 24 hour truck tyre repair team got to the building site at 9:56am and were gone on to other tyre replacement jobs at 10:30am.

7 – These two pictures were taken at a construction site near Cambridge where clearly the wheel had come into contact with a more solid object, effectively destroying the wheel nut cover which was removed and the driver advised to replace it asap.  Also the Goodyear truck tyre was removed too as it had sidewall damage and so was sent to the ‘bank’ for possible recycling.  Our commercial tyre fitter near Cambridge replaced the damaged tyre with a 285/70R19.5 HANKOOK AH35 on the near side front. Apart from the scrape you can see the wheel survived the impact and this tyre replacement job took 1 hour and 6 minutes to complete so as with most jobs well within the 90 minutes to get a vehicle with a commercial tyre issue back on the road that we pride ourselves on

8 – This wheel was not so lucky as the previous one as you can see and was replaced.  The 385/65R22.5, SUPER SINGLE TRAILER tyre was damaged too and replaced with a HANKOOK TH31 on the near side front position.  The old tyre only had 4mm of tread depth remaining and so was scrapped.  Our truck tyre services team took just 25 minutes to complete this job at the roadside at an unknown service station.

9 – One of our monthly favourites is a tyre repair on a dumper truck this 800/45-30.5 ALLIANCE tyre puncture on the nearside rear was described as a gator repair or as some would spell it gaitor repair. Not the first time that we cater for different spellings as we often see signs or have web searches for truck tires or van tires.  You often see truck tyre spelled tire around the perimeters of football pitches on their advertising hoardings and so we have to cater for both. Our dumper truck driver had their puncture fixed in an hour and was soon back operational on the building site in Crawley.

10 – Our final pair of tyre pictures do look like a tyre disaster with many of the over 100 components that make up a truck tyre on display ( plug for a forthcoming blog about the many and surprising components that make up a truck tyre)  A 315/70R22.5 Budget tyre, valve, HPVC and wheel was fitted to replace the truck tyre that was blown out.  The reason for the large amount of wheel damage, which in fact was cracked, was because the driver was forced to drive on it to get to a safe place to stop for us to fix the blown truck tyre. The incident took place on the northbound carriageway for the M6 unfortunately just after junction 16 not far from Keel services and the turn for Crewe and Stoke.  In addition to the wheel damage, there was damage to the wing cover and brake chamber the tyre replacement job took 50 minutes including a 30 minute re-torque.
