Tyre Troubles May 2023

May 2023- Here are some more pictures from our 24/7 lorry tyre services team around the UK showing examples of commercial truck and van tyre repairs or fitting replacement tyres during the last month.
We have over 1,000 depots nationwide servicing more than 300 emergency fleet and commercial vehicle callouts every day.
Our aim is to fix any tyre, anytime and anywhere and most importantly, get you back on the road in under 90 minutes.

1. Unusually, at a wind farm in Cumnock our emergency commercial tyre fitting service fitted a 315/80R22.5 Hankook DH31 on the Near Side 3rd Inner Drive position. The old tyre a Continental CHD3 was removed due to tread damage. The driver had been given this torque tag from the fitter as he wanted to retorque the wheel nuts himself. As you can see the tag indicates which positions need torquing after 30 minutes. The damaged truck tyre had a tread depth of 8mm and so went back to the tyre bank for possible repair and re-use.

2. This Taurus tyre had to be removed after a blowout. It was replaced with a 215/75R17.5 Jinyu JF568 and was fitted to the offside front, meaning it was a steering tyre. It also had a HPVC Cap fitted too. The old tyre was scrapped because it only had 4mm of tread depth left. This fast roadside commercial tyre replacement took just 15 minutes to complete at the Snowfields Academy, Cranbrook not far from Hastings and Maidstone.

3. Here are the culprits that punctured a Ceat tyre on a JCB Forklift truck. The 15.5/80R24 near side rear tyre was successfully repaired and is one of the many plant jobs that our mobile emergency commercial tyre repair or replacement teams deal with every day. In this case there was plenty of tread depth left (18mm) and the puncture repair took 18 minutes to complete on site at a commercial premises in New Romney, Kent.

4. We always aim to be as flexible as we can and in this instance the customer had their own replacement tyres but clearly needed the truck tyre replacement equipment and expertise to resolve the problem. Three 385/65R22.5 super single tyres were replaced, with our fitter just fitting them.  The damage to the truck was all along the nearside of the vehicle causing blow outs that resulted in the tyres being scrapped. The whole job took 1hr 5 minutes to complete and was located at a storage facility in Steventon near Didcot, Oxfordshire.

5. This 385/65R22.5 super single trailer on the offside front was a Bridgestone DURS2 160K tyre. It was replaced with an identical truck tyre that the vehicle operator already had as a spare. The failed tyre had 15mm of tread depth left and so still would have had a lot of life left but it experienced a blowout, the old tyre went back with the driver for them to dispose of or send back to supplier for blowout analysis. The job took 25 minutes to complete at a roadside location on the A3, in a layby, northbound near Petersfield travelling towards Guildford.

6. Another tyre catastrophe in the South East, this time on St Margarets Road, St Leonards on Sea, near Hastings. A 185/70R13C (commercial) Linglong tyre was fitted by our same day truck tyre mobile fitter. As you can see from the photo the tyre had a blowout with cuts to the cords, where there was tread, it measured 5mm which is more than the legal limit of 1mm. The new tyre that was fitted to the off side rear of the vehicle also had a valve, balance & HPVC fitted, taking just 20 minutes to complete.

7. We often hear from our mobile tyre fitters that they prefer for the truck driver to keep out of the way both from a safety perspective but also because they want to get on with the job and complete it as quickly as possible. The driver of this vehicle was very obliging in that he went off for a much-needed sleep in his cab whilst our truck tyre call out service got on with fitting a 315/80R22.5 to the near side front removing and replacing the Hankook Smart Flex AH51 with a 156 load rating and 30 minute retorque carried out on the new identical tyre that was removed whilst not disturbing the driver’s sleep. The job took 47 minutes to complete and whilst it was an out of hours callout it was only 19:47 when our fitter left, leaving the old tyre to be returned with the driver when he woke up at the Swindon Truckstop on the A420/A419 junction.

8. This 315/70R22.5 on the offside middle position was replaced with a Blacklion BT165 tyre on a 154L rating. An old goodyear Kmax steer tyre was scrapped due to the blowout. Our roadside lorry tyre services team took 1hr 4 minutes to carry out the tyre replacement on site on the M1 southbound, after junction 31.

9. Another job on the south coast in Worthing and another forklift truck. The inside and outside photos show the damage and the repair to the 15.5R25 Forklift on the nearside front axle. The Supreme tyre, that was punctured and repaired, had a long life ahead of it with 7mm tread depth. The job was completed in 48 minutes first thing in the morning with our tyre repairer leaving the site at 09:08.

10. This Pirelli 315/70R22.5 on the offside front wheel clearly had cut cords and so was replaced with a Bridgestone DUR52 tyre with a 156L and HPVC along with a 30 minute retorque carried out. The old tyre went back with the driver. Our same day commercial tyre fitting service started at 7:30am and was completed at 9am just on our 90 minute target at Littlehampton Services.
